Why Does History Repeat Itself?

Why does history repeat itself?

It is a fascinating question.

Each generation learns about the mistakes of those who came before them. We study financial crises, market bubbles, and economic collapses. Yet somehow, similar events continue to occur.

Many people assume that history repeats because people fail to learn from the past. I am not convinced that is true.

More often, history repeats because people know the past very well, yet believe that their situation is different.

They believe:

“This time is different.”

At the peak of every major bubble, there has always been a compelling narrative.

In the late 1990s, the Internet was going to change the world. And it did. The problem was not the technology. The problem was that investors assumed every internet company deserved an extraordinary valuation.

Many companies with little revenue and no profits saw their stock prices soar. Eventually, the dot-com bubble burst.

Today, I often find myself asking a similar question about artificial intelligence.

Is AI truly different?

Many argue that it is. Their argument is reasonable. Unlike many internet startups of 2000, today’s AI leaders such as NVIDIA, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta are enormously profitable businesses. AI is already creating tangible economic value and transforming industries.

Clearly, there are important differences between the AI boom and the dot-com era.

However, history does not repeat because technology stays the same.

History repeats because human behavior stays the same.

Greed, optimism, overconfidence, and the belief that “the rules no longer apply” have appeared in every major market cycle.

I believe AI will change the world, just as the Internet did.

What remains uncertain is whether today’s valuations and expectations are fully justified.

Perhaps a decade from now, we will look back and conclude that the AI revolution was real.

At the same time, we may also conclude that some expectations and market valuations became excessive.

History rarely repeats itself exactly.

But it often rhymes in remarkable ways.

And in investing, perhaps the most dangerous phrase is still:

“This time is different.”
