Samsung Electronics remains one of the world’s leading semiconductor companies, yet its stock price has recently come under pressure. While some investors point to China’s CXMT and its 4F² DRAM announcement, the reality is more complex.
The market’s concerns are less about a single competitor and more about Samsung’s position in the next phase of the AI semiconductor race.
The first concern is High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). HBM has become the most important memory product for AI accelerators, and investors are watching closely to see how much share Samsung can secure in future HBM4 and HBM5 deployments. In today’s market, success is increasingly measured not by traditional DRAM market share but by leadership in AI memory platforms.
The second concern involves Samsung’s foundry business. Reports suggesting that NVIDIA prefers a TSMC 3nm process for the HBM4 base die have reinforced perceptions that TSMC maintains an edge in advanced logic manufacturing. Even though the memory stack contributes most of the HBM value, the market views foundry competitiveness as an important component of Samsung’s long-term valuation.
The third concern is China’s growing semiconductor ambition. CXMT’s announcement of a future 4F² DRAM roadmap demonstrates that Chinese memory makers are moving beyond basic capacity expansion and are beginning to participate in next-generation memory architecture development. While it remains unclear how quickly these technologies can reach high-volume manufacturing, investors tend to discount future competitive threats well before they materialize.
However, there is another way to interpret Samsung’s recent stock weakness.
The market may not be questioning Samsung’s ability to manufacture memory chips. Rather, it is asking whether Samsung can maintain leadership in the convergence of advanced DRAM, HBM, logic integration, packaging, and AI infrastructure. This is where future value creation will occur.
In my view, the key question is not whether CXMT can announce a 4F² DRAM architecture or whether TSMC produces the HBM4 base die. The more important question is whether Samsung can remain a leading supplier of AI memory solutions over the next decade.
That question, more than any single news headline, will ultimately determine Samsung Electronics’ long-term valuation.
